Air Clarity: A Transparent Approach to Indoor Air Quality

Designing for Visibility and Functionality

Inspired by the concept of Design Visibility, Air Clarity allows users to clearly observe the operations of the air cleaner and replace the filter in a timely manner. The primary goal is to maintain the air quality in the room and prevent the circulation of dust and pollutants.

What sets Air Clarity apart is its ability to keep the dust within its body, allowing users to precisely see the accumulation and decide whether or not it is time to switch the filter. The clear glass cover not only provides a sense of refreshment but also serves as a visual indicator of the air cleaner's effectiveness.

The design of Air Clarity incorporates high-quality materials to ensure both durability and functionality. The clear cover is made with tempered glass, while the base is die-cast with aluminum alloy. The lid is made with taulman-618, a strong and flexible material.

With dimensions of H:300mm and D:230mm, Air Clarity is compact and suitable for various indoor spaces.

The operation of Air Clarity is simple and user-friendly. Once the power is turned on, the air is sucked in from the top and goes through a pre-filter to remove visible dust particles. The air then enters the interior of Air Clarity and undergoes a second filtration process using a true-HEPA filter. Finally, the clean air is discharged from the base.

The construction of Air Clarity posed a challenge in finding a balance between showcasing the collected dust and maintaining a clean appearance. The dust filtered out during the first stage can only be seen at a certain angle, while the true-HEPA filter cartridge is visually distinguishable through color contrast.

Chang-Yu Pan proposed the Air Clarity project in March 2014, and it was produced in June of the same year. It was displayed at the art center of Kao Yuan University in September 2014, showcasing its innovative design and functionality.

Air Clarity has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Home Appliances Design category in 2015. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
